7 Signs It’s Time To Replace The Windows In Your Home

It’s moving toward winter here in Detroit and the wintry winds are blowing, creating a chill in the air and a drop in temperature…

HOLD UP. Do you feel that? The winter winds are coming into your home. That cold draft you feel inside is most likely coming from your windows.

A drafty feeling inside your home is just one of the many reasons your windows might need to be replaced, and if there’s a draft, there are probably several issues with your windows that you might not even notice!

Let’s keep the cold out, and your windows in the best shape this coming season by replacing and upgrading them.

Don’t know if you truly need a replacement? Here are 7 reasons why it’s time to replace the windows in your home.

1. You Have One or More Damaged Windows

An obvious sign that your window(s) need replacing is visible damage to the window or surrounding area.

A small crack can make a big impact on how efficient your window is. By postponing replacement you are losing more money from a higher energy bill over time compared to the cost of replacing it.

2. You Are Feeling Drafts

This might be one of the most important reasons to replace your windows. A draft coming in through your windows means they are not working like they’re supposed to. You will most likely struggle with heating or cooling your house properly because the windows are constantly allowing cold or hot air into the home!

You can enjoy the changing seasons by looking out your window—and not feeling the changing temps as you do.

3. You Have Outdated and Older Windows

Did you know the average age of a single-family home in Detroit and surrounding areas is 75+ years? If you have never replaced the windows in your home and don’t know the last time they were replaced by previous tenants, it’s highly likely that your windows are outdated single-paned glass.

This is problematic because not only are they not energy efficient, they don’t provide adequate UV protection. If you notice curtains, furniture or flooring around your windows becoming lighter or looking “bleached,” it’s because your windows are blocking out the UV rays.

Modern-made windows have low-e glass which provides UV protection while keeping your home bright and cheery!

4. You See Condensation Inside Your Home or In-Between the Window Panes

Condensation on the outside of your windows is nothing to worry about, but if you see condensation inside your home or in between the window panes, it’s because the seal of your window is broken and leaking air inside.

That’s a big thumbs-down for window efficiency and will also be a cause of the drafts you’re feeling!

5. You’re Not Maximizing Your Energy Efficiency

Your older windows are most likely not up to date and do not comply with modern, Energy Star-approved windows that are designed for maximum energy efficiency.

Did you know windows are called the silent energy killer? Because you don’t even realize how much money you are losing by not replacing older windows! You can save hundreds on your energy bill by upgrading your windows and taking advantage of government-based energy incentives.

6. It’s Loud

Windows are meant to be looked through, not heard through! Even though you may think that the clear panes should allow noise in, that’s not true at all!

If it’s extremely loud—or louder than you think should be coming through your windows—that’s a sign they are no longer working properly. The seals have most likely failed, not creating an airtight lock between the window and the frame. It could also be that because your window is older, it has expanded and contracted so much over the years that it doesn’t sit as flush in your home.

7. Your Window Isn’t Working Right

If your window needs more than a little WD-40 to open, or if you’re experiencing a “drop window” (where the top window won’t stay up), it’s probably a good time to replace your windows.

Windows that don’t function properly can be dangerous because they can lead to injuries like smashed fingers, problems like broken panes from falling too hard and fast, or even having a window fall out of your home!

So don’t minimize the issue of a non-functioning window and end up having a bigger problem on your hands when it really goes awry!
